To add to my chaos, my sister is off to South Africa for three weeks, so I am in charge of the farm, along with another friend of ours, Vicky. I say chaos, it is pretty quiet down there at the moment and fortunately Pokey's new piglets are not due until the end of April so it should be stress free. I just hope we don't get any more rain or I could possibly lose a small child in the mud!
So, as my sister is going to be away, yesterday we moved her nine chickens from her garden up to the yard as Foxy Loxy has a terrible habit of paying a visit to her house if he knows she is on holiday! She has created a fox proof home for them in one of the large stables. It is a big space and to make it more interesting for them she has put in some old crates that they will enjoy sitting on, added a roosting perch and thrown down plenty of straw. (See video above).
We were expecting them to be a pain to catch but actually it was a quick process and within twenty minutes they were all safely settled into their new home. The only one that caused us a few problems was Roger the Rooster, who can be a bit feisty but he does a great job of keeping all the hens in check and will do his best to protect them from any unwanted predators.
The big challenge will be finding the eggs every morning, as usually they would all lay in the nesting box, but at least that will keep my children busy whilst I sort the other animals out!
Have a great weekend!
